Good news from abroad:

Remarkable success of Jiří Kratochvil and Michal Viewegh´s books on the German language book market, Michal Ajvaz broadly reviewed for the English editions of his two novels published in USA by Dalkey Archive Press.

Michal Viewegh in German
The novella Engel des Letzten Tages (Deuticke/Zsolnay, March 2010) is widely reviewed in Austria and Germany, for the renowned critic Christine Westernann it is „my vote for the book of the Spring 2010. The title has appeared in the popular ORF Bestenlist. This success is followed by the fact that paperback rights for two novels by Michal Viewegh already published in German have been bought by DTV.

Jiří Kratochvil in German
The media response for the German edition of Jiří Kratochvil´s novel Promise (Das Versprechen des Architekten) are more than „promising“. The whole page reviews appeared in leading newspapers, the author had his extended interview on TV prime time news on the ORF 1 channel. In June, the book appeared on the German best 10 crime fiction list of the daily Die Welt, and in Salzburger Nachrichten, it was voted the book of the month.

Especially The Other City (Dalkey Archive Press, 2009) is doing really well: Amazon.com Editor's Top 10 Science Fiction/Fantasy Book of 2009
Selected as one of the best books of 2009 by Time Out New York
Selected as one of the best books of 2009 by Locus Magazine

The book is already published in 5 languages, the Swedish and Norwegian edition is being prepared.

The author will also be represented in the Best European Fiction 2011, anthology to be published by Dalkey Archive Press, USA.

Domestic News:
Two authors are currently shortlisted for the Josef Škvorecký literary prize – Antonín Bajaja for his novel Na krásné modré Dřevnici / On the Beautiful Blue Dřevnice and Kateřina Tučková for her novel Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch / The Expulsion of Gerta Schnirch. The results to be announced in October.
Note: both the books were also nominated for Magnesia Litera award this year, where Tučková gained the readers prize. For the same book, she was also already shortlisted for Jiří Orten Prize for the writers under 30 years of age.
The latest book by Petra Soukupová Zmizet / To Dissapear has been ranked among 10 best sold fiction titles in the Czech Republic, with the total sales of about 9. 000 copies, which is the extraordinary success for such a young author. This triptych of stories is also very widely reviewed, the portfolio with extracts of the reviews translated into English is already available. The extended English sample translations from both the books by Petra Soukupová are available on request, too. Rights for To Disappear sold to Italy.
Note: the book is the current holder of the title The Book of the Year, the main category in Magnesia Litera Awards.

In October, the new novel by Michal Viewegh will be published under the title Biomanželka / Bio-Wife.

Novel The Expulsion of Gerta Schnirch / Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch by Kateřina Tučková (Host, October 2009) is being nominated for Jiří Orten Prize for young authors under 30 years of age. The results are to be announced in May during the Prague book fair.

Three Magnesia Litera Awards 2010 to our authors

Three authors represented by the literary agency have been awarded the Magnesia Litera prize (the results were made public on Sunday, 18th April), in the following categories:

Kateřina Tučková - Das Thema Zweiter Weltkrieg und Vertreibung wird auch nach 55 Jahren noch immer heiß diskutiert. Kateřina Tučková (geb. 1980), eine junge Brünner Autorin, die derzeit am Institut für Kunstgeschichte der Karlsuniversität Prag ein Doktorandenstudium absolviert, hat sich dieses Themas in ihrem Roman „Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch“ (Die Vertreibung der Gerta Schnirch, 2009) angenommen und schildert das tragische Schicksal einer jungen Deutschen aus einer zweisprachigen Familie, die Ende Mai 1945 den sog. „Brünner Todesmarsch“ überlebt, in dem das Gros der nach der Befreiung der Stadt verbliebenen Deutschen Richtung österreichische Grenze getrieben wird. Gerta Schnirch und ihre kleine Tochter kehren nach einigen Jahren in die mährische Kapitale zurück, doch die Stadt ist ihr fremd geworden und als Deutsche bewegt sie sich am Rande der Gesellschaft. Bis heute wissen nur wenige Brünner, was mit den 58 000 Deutschen, die einmal in ihrer Stadt lebten, genau passiert ist. Entsprechend die aktuellen (kontroversen) Reaktionen nach Erscheinen des Romans in Brünn.
Die Lesung ist zweisprachig und wird von Thomas Krzenck moderiert.
