David Zábranský
born 1977 prose writer, columnist
In April 2007 his first novel Any Beach but This / Slabost pro každou jinou pláž was awarded the prestigious Magnesia Litera literary prize for debut of the year. He took part in the 2007 First Novel Festival in Budapest, Hungary, and was a participant in the 2007 Young.Euro.Connect project.
His debut is distinguished by the striking ability to address the subjects that Western civilization faces today - at the beginning of a century which has gone into overdrive.
Zábranský represents a new generation of Czech authors who are not merely Czechs but have already become Europeans. His writing differs strikingly from the typical Czech writing of the past, and it has no truck with tradition.
His first fruit was reviewed very widely and has been reprinted twice since its release in autumn 2006 - an astonishing achievement for a debut work by a new Czech author.
