Viola Fischerová

born 1935
poet, translator and authoress of a book for children
The first lady of contemporary Czech poetry.

One of the authors who did not want to publish under the communist regime or were not permitted to. She never published her first poems, which are included in the collection Propadání (Falling Through, 1957). In 1968 she and her husband, writer Pavel Buksa (Karel Michal), emigrated. She spent almost 30 years abroad, living in Swiss and German exile. She began to write only in the late 1980’s, when her first husband died. 
Her poetry has been published in numerous literary magazines and anthologies throughout the world, she has received several literary prizes both in the Czech Republic and abroad (f. e. Dresdener Lyrik Preis, 2006).
Selected Poetry by Viola Fischerová has been published in one volume in Poland (ATUT, 2006) and in Spain (Bassarai, 2007).

Her first book for children What the Boredom Told / Co vyprávěla Dlouhá chvíle was awarded the prestigious Magnesia Litera literary prize and the Gold Ribbon of the Czech section of IBBY for the most beautiful book of the year.
